Power went off today. We're no longer safe here. Took water, guns and food and we're leaving now. I'm in the back of the squad vehicle. We had to leave Derek's truck behind and he wasn't happy about it, but what can you do? We're leaving Moncton.

sackville was overrun.
my parents are dead.

Dec. 17, 2009

We arrived back in the Moncton area yesterday night. The power's still off, but we found a message left on the prayer board of a church in Sackville. As of the fifteenth, apparently there has been a group of survivors hiding out in a daycare in Riverview. We're running low on gas, and we've been camping out in the squad car since last night. We took a run into Toys R Us in Champlain Mall . . . yes, really. We had guns, so it was okay. There are lots of zombies in the mall, but we decided that if there were any survivors left in the daycare . . . well, that we might play Santa for them.

I'm not avoiding the subject. I swear.

When we left Moncton, I asked that we go to Sackville to check on my parents. It was awful. You could see the smoke from the highway from the burning buildings. I think the Irving must have exploded, because there wasn't much left of it.

Zombies were just . . . everywhere. Thank goodness Bruno's such an excellent driver, otherwise I'm not sure we would have gotten by them all. They were moving down the road in near packs. There had been a lot of cars off the road on the way up, but no zombies. This was awful . . . it was disgusting! I tried not to focus as Bruno plowed them down with the squad car. I feel like such a baby. Every time Bruno's car hit someone--someTHING, I guess--I'd cry a little. It's hard, being in the middle of this . . . whatever it is. Zombie apocalypse? Hah, I hope not. I want some hope that this isn't going on everywhere in the world.

We passed Mount Allison University and took a side road to where my parents' house is. There is nothing that ever really prepares you for the moment you discover that the people you cherish the most are absolutely lost to you. As we neared my parents' house, I saw a distinct figure lurching unpleasantly down the road. Dad. Daddy. I . . .

[There is some indistinguishable writing here, marked by stains and spots. Looking at it, one would judge that something was written there, but water blurred the writing.

I don't want to talk about this part anymore.

We went back to the church we had passed by Mount A. We had to go somewhere and I couldn't stop crying. The letters on the church sign were arranged to read "the church will always be a sanctuary" in big, bold lettering, and I guess the boys decided to use it as such. We went in, and it was, surprisingly, safe. I guess no one got infected during a church service. As unlikely as that sounds, well, it was refreshing. I'm not really into religion but I'll admit, it made it feel as though someone was looking out for us.

Apparently I cried myself to sleep on the altar. I don't remember it, but I do remember waking up to Bruno and Derek talking. I got up and wandered over to see what was going on, and they showed me the prayer board that was at the front of the church. They showed me the names of people who had written on the whiteboard, and a lot of them were very recent. I recognised some as my parents' friends, but little else. Bruno pointed to one in particular, which read "Please watch over all the children in the daycare in Riverview. Bring them to safety.", and was dated December 15th. We decided to head back in that direction to see if it was true. It wasn't like we had anything better to do.

Thank goodness for rural gas stations, anyway. One we went to on a back road still had some gas left, and there were no wandering ex-patrons, luckily. Well, there was one . . . I think it must have been one of the former workers. We went in expecting to find someone, though, so it didn't take us long to get rid of him. We stocked up on some packaged and canned goods and took off. We grabbed some fireworks, too . . . those could come in useful. We're just not sure when yet.

That was when we went back to Moncton, went to Champlain and are now camping out in the squad car. Oh. I think I hear Derek getting up. I guess we'll eat something and get on the road. Hoping we can make a Christmas miracle for the children. . . .
Things aren't going so well for Tracey and company.

Part 5 submitted before I go to get about 4 hours of sleep and get up to work. Merry Christmas everyone!!
