Literature Text

It's still Dec. 20.

I don't know how, but miraculously we're all fine.

We were driving along, like I was saying, when an SUV literally pulled right out in front of us. It was practically driving on two wheels. The car flipped but we were all wearing our seatbelts, and the most harrowing injury was the one Bruno suffered by driving his elbow through the window so we could escape. Poor Diana wouldn't stop screaming... it was so awful to hear her. She's fine now, though. It gave her quite a start, as she had been fast asleep.

As soon as we got out of the car, a zombie lunged at us. It wasn't hard for us to put two and two together after we got rid of it. Probably the person in the SUV had been bitten and was trying to get out of the village, then turned while driving. It probably happened a lot in the city, too, really.

Zombies are not very good drivers.

Anyway, the car's wrecked. We all have some cuts and bruises from the accident, and I'm sure we'll be sore for a few days. The worst thing is, though, that we're going to have to hoof it to Alma instead of drive now. We'll have to be extra careful and we're considering walking through the woods instead of taking the road.

After we killed that zombie, we entered the village, trying to be quick. Some zombies were on the street, but not many. We decided we had to get Diana to some shelter because we were all too shocked from the crash to do much walking today. We could take one more day of rest before pressing on.

We found several houses off the main street that seemed vacant. We tried the front door of one of them and it was unlocked, but of course we found a couple of zombies inside. The boys went in first to clear the place out and I stood outside with Diana, holding her hand. After they had secured the place, they threw the zombie corpses out the window and let us in. I got Diana upstairs to one of the bedrooms. Funnily enough it seemed that the house was once home to a girl about her age, so she slept on the bed there. She hugged a teddy bear she found and fell asleep. I stayed with her, and Derek came up to keep me company while she slept.

While all this was going on, I could hear Bruno hard at work downstairs. He had found a hammer and some nails, and he was actively boarding up all the windows. We decided to leave the upstairs windows alone, though, so we had some light. After all, it doesn't seem that zombies have enough motor function to be able to properly climb.

We found plenty of supplies in this house. We were lucky enough that nobody else had raided it. I really hate to think like this, but it was a good thing that the family living there turned so quickly. If they had left and packed up their things, we might not have been in as good a state as we are now. I really, really don't like to say that, but well, I guess it's just the survival of the fittest. At present, we're the fittest.

To summarise things, we made some supper. We found another bunch of canned goods and made a pot of soup. I'm really starting to crave real food. I hope that Newfoundland's untouched. I'll be getting a big fat cheeseburger first chance I get. All this canned crap is starting to taste the same, but it's all we can eat, since all the bread, cheese, milk, meat, etc. is rotten no matter where we go. We set a fire in the garbage can downstairs in the middle of the living room, and Derek's reading a novel he found. Diana's really come around from this afternoon. It must be hard to be so young, having to mature so fast.

We've convinced Bruno to give up his post for the evening and get some sleep. Poor guy has been helping us so much, and he deserves a break. He's asleep on the couch now, and we're all keeping watch. I think I may sleep soon, anyway. I'm falling pretty fast.
